Quesadillas Or Tummy Tickler?

Of course, the official name is Quesadillas but for years, and even today, I and my children call it Tummy Tickler only as it tickles their tummies and they get desperate to eat it. But why this name? A name which is more like a nickname and the outside world knows nothing about it, and even if you Google it, there won’t be any results. No idea, why it got this name. Let me go into the bylanes of memories to share with you all why and how I started making these.

Thanksgiving

This recipe is not mine but the credit goes to my sister in law, Vandana Gupta. Decades back when she shared this recipe of quesadillas with me, then neither of us knew that it was actually a version of Mexican Quesadillas. Today, our kitchen is no less than that of a Five-star hotel where each and every country’s cuisine is tried. But, as you know, times were different till the year 2000. Our kitchens were confined to simple day to day food and exploring international cuisine was not very common. I think you will agree with me on this front. So, after learning from her, I tried these Desi Quesadillas and these were super duper hit. A big thanks to her for this evergreen recipe which has maintained its rating with my children till date.

Roti Quesadillas A Boon For Mothers

There’s nothing new in kids throwing tantrums to eat food. Most of the kids just do not want to eat regular food and make their moms go nuts when she tries to do so. Normally, children do not like to eat chapatis and mothers have a tough time in feeding their child. Either they pamper them or cajole or bribe or something else. They do all sort of things just to feed a chapati or two to their kids. My case was no different. Feeding my 2 children, that too both boys, was no less than a Herculean’s task for me. At that time, this recipe of Desi quesadillas proved to be a boon for me. The same child who resisted in eating just one chapati now would have 2 quesadillas, which means 4 chapatis, easily. Trust me, at times they would go for 3 quesadillas too.

This recipe was such a saver for me in many ways. Time saver, as both my sons themselves ate it and that too quickly. Effort saver, as I neither had to make any extra efforts to make these nor had to spend time in cajoling them to finish the food. It was a tension reliever too as no worries of boys not eating the food.

Believe me, today both my sons are adults, but even now they often demand to have these quesadillas, though they still call these Tummy Ticklers only.

With these Tummy ticklers, children will demand to have these. So, good for both Mumma and kids. In fact, they are so yummy that forget kids, even others would love to have it.

What Are Quesadillas?

Quesadillas is a Mexican dish where Tortillas are sandwiched with a filling and then cooked from the sides. And what are Tortillas? If I say in simple words, these are nothing but Chapatis, thin and slightly undercooked. What we Indians call Chapati, Mexicans call it Tortillas. Of course, there is a slight difference in terms of flour, leavening agents etc but nothing major.

These chapatis are stuffed with cheese, pizza toppings and any type of filling, be it vegetarian or non-vegetarian.

Quesadillas In Lunch Box

As a mother, you want to pack chapatis in your darlings lunch box. As children, they want something different in their lunch box. Something which has oomph factor and they can impress their friends with. So, what to do? Simple, pack these Roti Quesadillas. Chapatis with an oomph factor! And, I assure you, you will get an empty lunch box when they return from school.

You can have these in breakfast or lunch or dinner.

Make-Ahead Quesadillas

The best part of this recipe is that you can make the chapatis well ahead of time and then do the filling when required.

The best part is that you can make the chapatis in advance and do the filling when required.

Make these only with cheese or add veggies too.

Quesadillas With Leftover Chapatis

Having leftover chapatis is nothing uncommon. We all are left with some chapatis every now n then. We may try to avoid having leftover chapatis but this is something we do have. But with this recipe, you wouldnt mind having leftover chapatis. If you have 5 or 6 leftover chapatis then the best would be to go for Roti Noodles, Chapatis with a Chinese flavour. But if having just 2 leftover chapatis also then you can make these Roti Quesadillas.

How To Make Roti Quesadillas?

It is a very simple process to make Roti quesadillas. Make normal chapatis. Do not put any clarified butter (ghee) on them. Sandwich the filling between two chapatis and cook on a griddle till crisp. Cut and serve. And if you have leftover chapatis then you just need to put the filling.
